Vitakraft Emotion ( Functional Sensitive)

Time for new foods !

My last one standing A.K.A , my lonely girl Ke Ke’s foods are all gone, so I need to go food shopping for her. The only problem I am facing  is as she is the only kid right now, the food consumption is extremely slow. I throw away last batch of foods because they start to smell funny. I can’t buy a lots of foods and mix together like last time, so I decided to buy tiny batch of foods for her. After loitering around the food aisle for like 20 minutes, I finally pick up 300g pkg of Vitakraft Emotion Functional Sensitive. Then I pick up a few organic seeds at NTUC. So, here it goes…

What I see?

Peanuts, Pressed peanuts, pressed corn, popped barley, a few color pieces, tiny grass stick that was passionately hated by hamster civilization , carob pieces a.k.a locust bean, you know those black disgusting looking pieces :p , Chamomile flower hips and lots of it. Chamomile smell very good and its good for their digestive tract and fur also.

My hammy?

I guess she like it, hell! she like all kind of food anyway LOL. She eat whatever I put in her bowl although always want to ask for more meal worm when I go near her. Whenever she make a goofy face and stand up on her leg , I melted and give her a few meal worm, now she know how to manipulate me 😀 She did love to eat peanuts and color pieces.

I also love it, its smell great and very fresh. She eat almost all of the ingredients except from those grass stick, so its good for her. Lots of flower hip, which are quite rare in other brand of food and 300 g small pkg is just nice for one hammy to eat up. Some of the green round color pieces are very big( look like some sort of dry veggie ball), maybe ok for Syrian hammy but quite big for a dwarfie to dig in. Overall I give 8/10 .

I also bought white sesame seeds and golden flax seed from NTUC organic aisle and new container for them.

So these will do a least two to three months for her.

A mess I made while….

Yup! those are Snapple bottles, they are cool, air tight , narrow neck container . Very good for storing seeds and dry stuffs. Recycle , recycle!

All done!

Second container: Organic Black Sesame Seeds, Quinoa Seeds and Buck Wheat.( Ionly mix half of each pack and keep the leftover in Snapple Bottle for next batch )

Third container: Sunflower Seeds, I bought one packet with s$3 from PLC

The green one in the front is leftover foods from previous batch .

And thats dog biscuit in the pink container at the back.

Phewwww! Now I don’t need to worry for their ration for awhile .

Pea leaves and green shoots !!

Hmmm, pea leaves or bean leaves ??????

Pea leaves sound cuter 😛

Lately I found out that beans are pretty easy to grow, not sure of legumes result because I am not gonna wait until they grow pods. My focus is on young shoots and green leaves. They are highly nutritious and so easy to get , just pick some straight from the pot in front of my flat.

I use some leftover beans from my white bean soup and decided to grow some. They become strong and healthy with willowy long stems and dark green leaves. This is going to provide fresh greens for my kids. Fresh, easy, cheap and home grown organic greens . Cool huh!

Furthermore, they are going to bear some pretty flower if I don’t cut the shoots to feed my kids all the time. haha!  All my kids love to eat the dark green freshness. Between full time job and half time studying, I can’t make a time to go groceries shopping. These little home grown shrubs and occasional sprouting ensure that my kids get enough share of their veggies. Sometimes I wonder what will my neighbors think of me. A strange women tending her plants, cleaning and taking out rubbish at 1am around midnight . Geez !

Not a lots of leaves left. On the side note, my aloe vera are getting huge and juicy.

De De ” sniff sniff, hmm smell good, mommy bring me some veggie .Yum!”

Ke Ke ” nom nom nom”

Dat ass >.>

Scabber ” sniff sniff, ha! That green stuffs again. Did she forget that I love to baby carrot 😦 “

Not so bad after all.

New Food Mix ! Versele-Laga Hamster Nature

Testing new food brand Versele-Laga Hamster Nature !

As my kid’s food is almost finished , I have to be prudence and buy a pack of food mix. I decided to buy Versele-Laga since they are making a good name. Bought at $9.85 from Pet’s Street. My sister have been making fun of me because before that day I told her that I will no longer pay around $9 and buy those olive oil bottle, they are just ridiculously expensive, and if I want to make any salad or pasta in the future I will just use canola oil ( NTUC brand) Rant and rant and rant. She said I rather feed my hamsters than feed the member of my family. Ooops Guilty 😛

Actually this brand has another version, Mini Hamster Nature for dwarfs hamsters. I take a look and those pieces are super tiny LOLz. I check a fruits contents etc, not much of a difference. I think they just cut smaller pieces for dwarfies . I just pick up this one because my gals are not very tiny and delicate, they can be very strong when its come to foods and I believe in giving them bigger and harder pieces to trim their teeth. They use to feed on Harry Hamster Foods, which in fact have bigger pieces than Versele-Laga, I just break up several extra large pieces for them. No problemo , but no sweet dry fruits like bananas and raisins for them . Will be picking out 😀 Sad story brah!!!! Still have my organic seed mix to mix in with this commercial foods, so I don’t worry that much !

So, this is the front. I love the hammy in the pic very much. Crouching teddy bear ❤

Review time !!

My reaction??? Smell disgusting , not sure of origin( although i suspect yeast ) its was like rotten pizza 😛 The food don’t look very appetizing , contains a lots of crunchy color pieces, not very clear small pieces that lookalike dry fruits or dry veg or nuts or something like that . wth ? I am also not very  happy of unclear ingredient lists . I will give 5/10 .

My kids reaction??? Scabber as a crunchy color pieces lover, love it enormously. He eat those moon shape pieces first , then some banana chips. He is a very choosy boy and that make me happy to see him eating enthusiastically. My gals De De & Ke Ke are ok with it. They are not very keen on those grains inside, leaves all those behind but overall is not that bad. They still eat those organic grains first ( sure they really love my organic seed mix ) then eat other stuffs from the pack.

Now I have a mix reaction about this brand of food, I like the fact that they love to eat it but I still think some stuffs like FOS, beetroot and raisins are not that great . They are very sweetening and I have an worry over Ke Ke for diabetes , so dilemma dilemma . The smell…….although unpleasant to me, seem like attract the hamsters. I always hide some special pieces( like pumpkin seeds, nuts)  around their house, to make them look for the food. After  I hide some pieces around their house, they can find it pretty fast now. Good for them !!

Quail egg ! Treats Treats Treats :P

I have been busy lately and haven’t done any special treats for them except from simple baby carrots and walnuts. Guilty as charged :p I bought some quail eggs for my stir fry vegetables today, apart from the boring veggie I give them quail egg. Scabber really love quail egg and always eat enthusiastically . De De mouth a bite or two only while Ke Ke did eat more happily. Scabber devour them well, but my lazy boy was half asleep while eating his share of egg pieces and go straight back to sleep after that. Good life ha!

Chopped and ready to serve.

De De taking a whiff and wondering what is this smell ☜(⌒▽⌒)☞

Scabber eating his quail egg with half closed eye lids, his butt is still inside his hamhead . Too lazy to come out all the way .  -_-

Loving the greens!

They all love pretty greens. Wheat grass are as nutritious as they are pretty.I am so glad to see they are a success story, now I am more confident to grow another round of green.

Grass under sunlight.

Scabber having his way with the grass.

Another successful green story is Parsley. I bought JP40 100% natural dry Parsley today, decided to give them some. They all love it, Scabber finish off his in 5 minutes 🙂  Apigenin, a chemical found in great quantities in parsley, has been found to have potent anti-cancer activity. Maybe that why many believe parsley is a good tonic for hamsters. Come to food and treats, I always believe moderation is the key . So, I am going to give them a few every time I change their food bowl.

Its Jolly brand, 15 g.

The back, stating its only supplementary food.

Whats inside. I only found dry stems, wonder all the leaves go inside spice bottles for human consumption? LOL dunno, smell quite nice ::sniff sniff::

Wheat Grass! Whole new level for a noobie!

Wheat Grass, they are just very attractive and interesting.

I have been dreaming about growing wheat grass for awhile, mainly because their aesthetic look really please me. Green patch of grass and their upright green shoots are their attractive appeal. I do like to drink the wheat grass juice mix with apple juice, only commercial drinks from the supermarket of course. Juicing wheat grass myself seem like a little far fetch for me, but I would love to give a pot of young wheat grass to each of my hamsters.

First, I read up about germinating wheat grain and growing process. Predictable huh? My habit is to read first, do later 😛 is my fav website to do read up about sprouting. Their steps by steps guide, comprehensive videos and pictures are very helpful for noobie like me. Baby steps, baby steps!!! First step is to obtain unpolish wheat grain and believe me its a real bitch to find any sort of those products in Singapore. Organic products aisle in NTUC is my only option, and I too busy to go to Cuppage Plaza( Organic Paradise) to buy better choices of organic goodies. Maybe one day……LOL

First , I bought the unpolish organic wheat grain . Its a trusted brand and cost me S$ 4.90. Quite expensive for small little bag of grain *_*

Clean under running tap water thoroughly, and soak them in water. I use colander because it is much simpler and easy to wash and drain.

Its after 12 hours. I soak them overnight, but I have a habit of waking up 1 or 2 times at night , so easy for me to change the water . The grains are starting to germinate and I can see the tiny little sprouts coming out from the place that is suppose to be germ. Tiny but its a good start.

After another 12 hours. Water the is a bit cloudy by the time I hit home. The tiny sprouts become more prominent, this is the sign of new life .

I am overjoy to see adorable sprouts spruce out of my grains 😀 This is after 12 more hours. I feed a spoonful to each of my kids, they sure love it .

I decided to try two ways in growing my grass, one will be just like the way they show in Spread the grains on baby clothes and water every 12 hours( I might be watering them every 8 hours though) . I don’t have any baby clothes or coconut fiber , so I just use dish washer . LOLOL Crazy substitute , but I decided the most important function is to absorb the water very well and give breathing room for the roots. So here it is, and I will be covering the grain for maybe one or two more they until the young grass prominently emerge.

For the leftover sprouts, I just spread them on rich soil in the pot. Will be watering them 2 times a day. I just wish to experience the patch of green grass coming out under the bright of the sunlight.

Now we wait.

I will be updating this post as my grass grows !

There is a big difference between the little ones inside my kitchen , and the little one outside my corridor . The later get enough sunlight and nutrients from rich soils, all the green shoots are as pretty as it can be. The little ones inside the kitchen are still white little sprouts , but I am still hopeful for them to become taller and give some lights to let them photosynthesis.

I took these pics this morning under sunlight .

Fresh sprouts and clean houses !

Weekend cleaning maniac time.

Clean up the whole house, tidy up my little garden and clean all three tanks of my kiddos.

I decided to change the set up for Scabber’s tank by taking out his hammock ( need washing and drying anyway) and put my make shift digging tower inside. This is the current set up, the colorful ladder is my hand make popsicle stick ladder. And I bought a new clear chopping sheet to use as floor mat for the shelf.

My whole collecting. J/k My three little pigs (^0^)

Photos of them , enjoying their clean tank and freshly hang red millet spray . Will have to wait until next week to enjoy like this again 🙂

De De acting cute.

Scabber thinking what should he do first, drink the water or eat the millet?

Ke Ke with her toiler paper roll. She pee and dirty her swing, after I wash it clean …I decided to keep away from her awhile and give her the toilet roll to play and bite for temporary . I think she is not very thrill with the notion, nevertheless she love to play hide and seek with this roll.

De De eating her millet spray.

Ke Ke trying to catch Waldo.

My flax sprout is a success.

I harvest some today, wash them clean and serve a small potion for each.

Both girls really love their red millet. I can’t control myself, itchy hand and make a .gif out of their eating expression 😀

Treats for me and my hams!!!

Today’s treats for my hams was carrot . I cut them into bite size cubes for them ❤ Clumsy me have an accident again, now Scabber’s bowl have a chip on the lid . I accidentally knock it while washing. I decided there is no real harm and just a little bit ugly, so no new bowl for him yet. This bowl is such a good size for him, so he will have to use this bowl until I find one that I really like .

Scabber with his carrot cubes

Ke Ke’s adorable eating poise.

Crazy gal De De refuse to eat her carrot and keep playing with her swing 😦

Well, treats for me is presents from my sister 🙂 Nuts and dry fruits. Super yummy 😛  She got me Pumpkin Seeds, Dry Figs, Dry Guava, Dry Strawberry and Dry Apple chips . Best sister everrrrr. I will have to take a lots of time to finished all of these.  I am thinking about sharing some of them with my hams too, except from Dry Guava because its ingredient include SO2. Strawberry and apple are freeze dry without any chemicals or flavor adding and Dry Fig is naturally sun dry. All have natural high sugar content , so I will give them tiny pieces each to enjoy ! nom nom nom ^0^

Vitakraft Life Power !

I bought a pack of Vitakraft Life Power to try out. I usually order my supplies from online stores but sometimes if I forgot to includes some small items, just pop to Pets’ Street at Sun Plaza. Quick and easy ! Like this time, I totally forgot to order the main diet so bought a pack of Life Power from there. The usual price is S$6.12 since I have membership that can enjoy 5% discount, I paid S$5.80 for this. Vitakraft life series is quite interesting but I decided to buy Life Power because I found it look more Yummy! LOL childish as it sound, I only wish to give my kids yummy looking food =]

I am going to use this as main diet and add in my organic seeds mix for them. Expiry date is next year august, so ditto for me.

I single out ingredients and took photos. I found it quite interesting that those wheat grains were popped . I am not sure of those pillow shape cracker and orange color round stuffs. But I found all the ingredients quite complete. My fav is Alfalfa , have been wishing to give more of it. And those sunflower seeds are very tiny and funny looking, I guess all big big ones were devoured by humans so that only tiny seeds left for hammies =]

Ingredients List as written on the packet:

  • Oats
  • Wheat Flour
  • Flaked peas
  • Flaked corns
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Popped Wheat
  • Dehydr carrots
  • Dehydr dates
  • Wheat bran
  • Oats hulls
  • Corn meal
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Alfalfa
  • Coarse Soybean
  • Skim milk powder
  • Soybean oil
  • Calcium Carbonate
  • Wheat germ
  • Wheat glutton
  • Sugar( don’t even think this is a good idea -_- )
  • Stinging nettle leaves ( not sure what is this and haven’t found any in the pack yet)
  • Salt
  • Malt
  • Iron Oxide
  • Vitamin A ( that what I am talking about 🙂 )

And bunch of  other supplements like Thiamine and zinc oxide ( gosh! I hate chemistry )

My opinion? The food is fresh, which is good .  A lots of good ingredients, which is also good but I can’t find some of the ingredients with my eyes. My eyesight is bad, but not that bad. Anyway some of them like soybean oil and vitamins can’t see shit anyway 😛  What bummed me is that its profusely shows dates on the front pack and talk about it a lots but I can count the dry dates pieces by using one hand, not much of it inside anyway. I wish more dry dates, carrots and sunflower seeds, and less color pieces .

My hammies’ opinion? They love it . Good catch huh! The best is those popped wheat grains, normally I always have to throw away those unthreatened wheat grains from Harry Hamster Food but they love the popped grains in this. They are not exactly excited about Alfalfa like I was but it has its moment =]  Scabber loves pillow shape cracker , the gals are ok with it . Everbody loves peanuts, which is inside the packet but not written on the ingredient list on the side of the pack. Guess ingredients list is not 100%  foolproof  ^_^
